OctoGripper Robot: the Octopus-Inspired Robotic Arm
The OctopusGripper is a bionic 'hand' for a robot that is able to pick up, hold and put down items using a combination of suckers and air. "The gripper consists of a soft silicone structure, which can be pneumatically controlled," Festo writes in a PDF describing the bot. "If compressed air is applied to it, the tentacle bends inwards and can wrap around the respective item which is being gripped in a form-fitting and gentle manner. "The robotic tentacle has two rows of suction cups and is made of silicone. To show the pneumatic system could work the company, which is based in Esslingen am Neckar and has a history of making unique robots, used its own 'motion terminal' to control the movements.
